Information about upgrading your installation of Photography Orders

With lots of new versions coming out all of the time, a lot of people ask us about upgrading. Here’s all the information you will need to know about upgrade.

How to get the latest files

When you first purchased Photography Orders, you received a download link. That download link is your unique download link, and when upgrades are released, you can download the latest version from that link.

If you don’t have that link anymore, email our support quoting your original paypal transaction number and the email address that was associated with your purchase, and we’ll resend the link.

How you can tell what version you’re currently using

Since version 2.3, your version number is shown at the bottom of your admin screen.

If you can’t see the version number there, you can tell that you are using version 2.x if the top part of your admin screen is green.

If your admin screen is the same colours and design as where your clients login, you are using version 1.x

Upgrading from version 2.x

To upgrade from version 2.x, copy the files from the zip file over the files on your hosting account. Then login to your admin screen, go to Settings->Upgrade, and click the Upgrade button.

Upgrading from version 1.x

Version 2 of Photography Orders was completely remade, so version 1 and version 2 are not compatible.

If you are running version 1 of Photography Orders, you need to install version 2 and then copy all of your existing photos and settings across manually.

If you have too many photos to transfer across, we recommend that to install version 2 and use version 2 for all new clients, and slowly phase out your use of version 1.

An important note about modifications

If you make modifications to Photography Orders, make sure that you backup any files that you have modified, otherwise they will be overwritten by the upgrade process.

When we make modifications to a system, we write down what file was modified and where, so that the file can be backed up during an upgrade, and the same modification can be made again easily.

Upgrade service

We also offer an upgrade service if you do not wish to upgrade yourself.

For hosted licenses (licenses where you pay a recurring fee), we offer this service free of charge, and you just need to email us and tell us your domain name.

For owned licenses, please purchase a support ticket and send us an email with your ftp details, your cPanel or hosting administration details, and your Photography Orders admin password, and we will perform the upgrade for you.

How can I integrate Photography Orders with my Photobiz website?

I recently received this query from a customer.

I was checking out your product (Photography Orders) and wondered if you could integrate with a Photobiz.com website. I’m exploring various options for a shopping cart, but I’m completely clueless when it comes to what’s required (code in the actual website? A new domain name? Who’s hosting? etc). Would you be able to give me a little more info?

I get variants of this question a lot, so I thought I’d post the answer here.

So PhotoBiz is a hosted application. That means, your website with them always has to be hosted with them. Also, Photobiz don’t allow you certain access to the hosting account, so we can’t install Photography Orders on Photobiz servers.

This means, to integrate a Photobiz website with a Photography Orders shopping cart, you need another web hosting account for Photography Orders, and then you can place a link on your Photobiz website to Photography Orders.

So for hosting, there are a few options. We have a hosted account option, or you can sign up with another web host like Dreamhost. Here is a bit more information about hosting: http://www.photographyorders.com/hosting/

In terms of the domain, you can point a subdomain of johndoephotography.com to your Photography Orders. So for example, you could make clients.johndoephotography.com the address for Photography Orders.

You can also get a subdomain of Photography Orders. So for example, johndoe.photographyorders.com

The last option people sometimes choose is to register a new domain for Photography Orders – so for example, johndoeclients.com

7 free wordpress themes for professional photographers

For a photographer looking to create a website cheaply, wordpress presents itself as one of the best options.

  • It’s free
  • It allows you to look professional
  • You can set it up yourself

Unfortunately, looking through all of the free themes available out there is a time consuming process. Lucky for you, I’ve looked through the complete wordpress theme directory and found these 7 to be the best.

I’m only looking at free themes in this post. Premium themes offer much more in terms of design and funtionality, and it would definitely be worth considering some premium themes when you’re creating your blog.

The themes I’ve chosen aren’t necessarily photo blogs – blogs that feature a photo each day. Those blogs are great, but what we’re looking for here are themes that are suited for a website to promote a small photography business. The themes here all include a place to list and show off your different services – wedding photography, portrait photography, etc.

Studiopress Black

Simplistic and sharp. Great room for a large image that showcases your work. I like how the pages are featured along the top, so you can easily create a page for each of your services.

Station

Another dark theme. Again, pages are prominently featured so galleries and information can be added to the site in the traditional way.

Tune

Another simple theme. This one isn’t so universal. Most photographers like black or dark themes because pretty much any picture works on a dark background. If you’ve got branding that matches this teal colour, Tune is definitely worth a look.

Dark Relief

A striking theme that will suit those that want a bit of extra flair.
